The Lonely Poplar is a sacred tree located in the open Kalmyk steppe.
It took third place in the 2020 European Tree of the Year poll.
It is situated on a hill near the village of Khar-Buluk, Kalmykia.
According to legend, the tree was planted in the early 20th century by a Buddhist monk who brought seeds from a pilgrimage to Tibet and hid them in his staff.
